Japan has long struggled to find a comfortable place in the world between its ally the United States and its powerful neighbour China. The current tension between those two great rivals has heightened Japan’s dilemma. It leaves makes Japan particularly vulnerable to being caught up in a conflict in the Asia-Pacific, with huge implications for its defence strategy.
