One of the world’s richest men, the legendary investor Warren Buffett, has recently poured some $6.5 billion into some of Japan’s biggest but often most overlooked companies — the trading firms known in Japan as the sogo shosha. They trade everything from iron ore to fried chicken. After years of trading below their real value, investors are taking another look at them following Mr Buffett’s gamble.
