Tokyo Begins 2021 in a state of emergency

A surge in cases of coronavirus has forced the Japanese government to prepare the country for another prolonged state of emergency. Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga reluctantly moved to restrict travel and clampdown on social events following warnings from the the governors of Tokyo and the three neighbouring prefectures that their region of Japan faces an increased threat from the virus.
